Tea, and Why Steeping Time Is the Variable

Tea occupies an odd position. It is widely treated as the gentle alternative, and per typical serving it usually is lower than coffee, but the assumption that it is negligible does not survive contact with a strong mug of black tea or a habit of six cups through the day.

The variable people underrate is steeping time. The leaf holds a fixed amount, and how much of it ends up in the cup depends heavily on how long the water and the leaf stay together. A bag pulled quickly and a bag left to stew produce noticeably different drinks from identical materials, and most people are not consistent about it. Leaf quantity does the same work in the same direction.

Matcha deserves a separate mention because the mechanism differs. It is a powdered leaf whisked into water rather than an infusion, so the whole leaf is consumed instead of only what the water extracted. Pre-workout powders share the problem in a less regulated form. Scoop sizes differ, some products are designed around a large stimulant dose, and taking a double scoop is common. Many are also taken in the late afternoon or evening, which is the worst possible timing for sleep. Cola, Chocolate and the Quiet Sources

Cola is the one people half remember. The amount per can is modest compared with coffee, but the pattern of consumption is different: cans are drunk through the afternoon and evening, sometimes several, and evening is exactly when the timing does the most damage. Some non-cola soft drinks contain caffeine as well, which is only discoverable from the label.

Chocolate is the source almost nobody counts, and the amount tracks the proportion of real cocoa solids. Milk chocolate is low, dark chocolate is higher, cocoa powder used in baking is higher again per gram, and white chocolate contains essentially none because it contains no cocoa solids. For most people this is a rounding error. For someone eating a large amount of very dark chocolate in the evening, it is not, and it is a plausible explanation for an unexplained pattern of restless nights.

Coffee-flavoured foods sit in the same blind spot. Coffee ice cream, tiramisu, coffee yoghurts and mocha drinks contain real coffee, and mocha in particular combines both sources. Caffeine in Medicines

Caffeine appears as an active ingredient in a range of over-the-counter products, most commonly in combination headache and migraine preparations, in some cold and flu products, and in dedicated alertness tablets. Decaf Is Not Caffeine Free
